Open Cultural Center is looking for a motivated new team member to manage the Language Lab, our language school in Barcelona. This position requires strong management and communication skills, and experience in teaching and events planning. Spanish and English fluency are required for this position.

The organisation

Open Cultural Center is a non-profit organisation that carries out various projects with migrants and refugees in Spain and Greece. In Barcelona, we offer various educational and cultural activities to both local people and newcomers to increase social inclusion and support migrants and refugees in finding their way into Spanish society. We do this in strong collaboration with the private sector for ensuring funding, volunteers and other forms of support, while also working closely with other organisations through Erasmus+ projects.

What will you do?

The mission of the Language Lab Manager is to develop, coordinate, implement and justify the projects and activities related with the Language Lab. This role involves managing the language courses, events, and different programs within the Language Lab. The Language Lab manager coordinates all the students and volunteers, and manages the workload and tasks of long-term volunteers and interns supporting the project, and reports to the Coordinator of OCC Spain. Also manages their fundraising activities, budget and expenses reporting, and monitoring and evaluation.

Below you can find a detailed description of the responsibilities related to this role:

  • Language course preparation: finding volunteer teachers, updating timetables, promoting the courses online, working closely with the Communications team to promote the courses and find volunteers, holding introduction meetings with new teachers and students
  • Language course implementation: managing all online and face-to-face lessons, being the main contact person for teachers and students throughout the course, managing the Language Lab Slack workspace
  • Language course content and materials: managing the Language Lab shared Drive folder, assisting volunteers with lesson planning, managing subscriptions to different online teaching/learning platforms, ensuring all volunteers have access to teaching materials, 
  • Monitoring and evaluation: managing the Language Lab airtable base on a daily-weekly basis, sending and reviewing feedback from students and volunteers, using the feedback to incorporate changes and improvements. 
  • Collaborations and partnerships: managing the Language Lab’s collaborations with other language schools, and other NGOs and similar projects, liaising between these organisations and students and volunteers
  • Planning events: scheduling regular (bi-monthly) events, finding spaces to host the events, distributing tasks among team members, planning activities, coordinating the communications for event promotion, managing the Language Lab WhatsApp group
  • Facilitating events: being present at events to facilitate and guide activities, being the main point of contact for attendees, supporting other team members
  • Managing the Language Buddies program: updating Airtable, coordinating all communications related to the program, matching buddies, being the main point of contact for buddies, collecting feedback, implementing improvements
  • Planning, coordination and execution of projects and activities of Language Lab
  • Monitoring, management, justification and technical and economic evaluation of projects and activities. 
  • Development of annual programme budget, expenses tracking, maintaining databases and preparing financial reports of Language Lab. 
  • Identification and formulation of new projects and proposals for public and/or private financing. Supporting the writing for grants and fundraising applications related to the Language Lab
  • Supporting the Fundrasing and Comms Team with the management of memberships coming from language courses.
  • Institutional relations and communication with the main stakeholders, including donors and other organisations doing similar projects.
  • Developement of training content and evaluation methodologies for the team
  • Promote and support communication activities to foster visibility of the Language Lab, e.g. taking pictures and creating content for the web and social medias.
  • Collaboration in the recruitment, training and coordination of volunteers and trainees participating in the language lab
  • Management of interns and volunteers participating in the Language Lab programme.
  • Coordination with the manager of the language projects of OCC Greece.
  • Managing programme communications, including emails and slack messages.
  • Holding and leading weekly team meetings with the Language Lab team
  • Supporting other projects linked to the Language Lab programme

What do we offer?

  • Monthly netto salary of 1.300€, 38hs a week, 13 payments, permanent contract, 3 months probation, and a holiday period of 30 working days per year (6 natural weeks).

What are the job requirements?

Must haves:

  • Experience in project management, teaching, and events 
  • Good skills in Excel/Google Sheets and preferably also in other Project Management tools such as Airtable and Slack
  • Advanced level of English and Spanish (written and spoken)
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • To be flexible, proactive and open-minded: we work in a fast-changing environment and you have to be capable to adjust to sudden changes and new developments


  • Experience working with OCC’s target groups 
  • Speaking Catalan or Arabic is a big advantage
  • Speaking other languages is also an advantage
  • Extensive experience in language teaching is a big advantage
  • Experience working with grassroots language projects is a big advantage
