About The Selfie of Migration (#BOZA)
The Selfie of Migration (#BOZA) was a collaborative project in which Open Cultural Center took part, led by journalists Anna Surinyach and Séverine Sajous. The project explored migration from the African continent to Europe through first-person narratives, placing the storytelling power directly in the hands of people on the move.
The main outcome of the project was the film #BOZA, which tells the journeys of Alhassane, Aminata, Mamadou, Mariam, and Yahya. Using videos and selfies recorded by the protagonists themselves, the film offers an intimate and authentic perspective on migration, aspirations, and resilience.
By prioritising self-representation and lived experience, #BOZA challenged dominant narratives around migration and highlighted the human stories behind the word “boza” — a term associated with hope, achievement, and survival along the migration route.
