About Language Lab
Language Lab is an inclusive language learning programme by Open Cultural Center that brings migrants, refugees, and local community members together through the power of language. The programme aims to remove linguistic barriers that often limit access to education, employment, and social participation, while also creating spaces for connection, confidence-building, and cultural exchange.
Language Lab offers a wide range of online and in-person classes in languages such as Catalan, Spanish, English, and Arabic. Courses are structured in three-month terms and are open to migrants and refugees living in the EU, including people in undocumented situations, through a scholarship system. Paid OCC members can also join the classes for an affordable monthly contribution, helping sustain the programme and expand access for others.
All classes are taught by trained volunteers and focus not only on language acquisition but also on participation and peer learning. In addition to classes, Language Lab organises language exchanges, cultural outings, and community events—especially in Barcelona—giving participants opportunities to practise their skills in real-life settings and build meaningful social connections.
By combining education, accessibility, and community-led learning, Language Lab supports participants in gaining practical language skills while fostering inclusion, mutual understanding, and a sense of belonging across diverse communities.
